Comments: Hello from England,
I am just writing to say your work has inspired a gifted and talented masterclass I am due to be teaching on the 17th October at Wade Deacon High School for my year 8 pupils. I have shown the pupils your work and they cannot wait for the event. The meanings behind each art piece are what has inspired me to run this session as we are currently federating with another school (Fairfield High School). I intend for pupils to explore their feelings over the upcoming federation and express it in this medium on a table top for the reception area in Wade Deacon High School. Thank you for the inspiration. Selina Green - Textiles Technology Teacher - Wade Deacon High School, Widnes, UK |

| Comments: Hi, Laurie, I bought your book at Aaron Brothers in December and found it truly inspirational. Since then I have created three mosaics and gave one to my daughter and son-in-law. I particularly like image transfer, but my method is a little different from yours. I use images printed on a laser printer, place them face down on uncured clay, burnish the back with the back of a spoon, spray water on the surface, and carefully rub the paper off. After it dries, I cure it. This is from Donna Kato's website. You may be interested in an artist I just stumbled across, Koo Shadler. She paints in egg tempera and her works are highly influenced by late medieval art. I wish you had a workshop in my area (Sacramento). |

I let them go wild with beads, rusted keys, pearl ex, etc. The results were amazing. We took some of the tiles and made a mirror. It was beautiful. Thanks so much for making your ideas so easy to understand. I look forward to more books. |

Today I was looking at it again and was particularly attracted by YOUR work, especially Animal Dreams and Ancestors. I left a comment on the latter and mentioned the work of Julie Paschkis (www.juliepaschkis.com), wondering if you were familiar with her work? She has a show right now at Grover/Thurston in Seattle. Maybe it's the colors and some of your imagery that give me a sense of connection between your work and hers. Anyway, I love yours! What a visual feast it's been to enlarge each of the images in your Gallery! Thank you. Robin A. |

Comments: Laurie,
I have purchased your book just in time ! I have been creating tiles to tile the top of a laundry center for myself. But I have been waffling over how to go about it. In your book you use mastic and paint it but still glue. I guess I thought the tiles would stick to the mastic , can you please explain ? Thank You So Much for your wonderful book ! Pat Razdik |

| Comments: Hi Laurie: Karen Cole is a dear friend of mine who raves about your work. I am an old artist (or should we say "longstanding"!) and new blogger. I am totally captivated by your work...the colors, the patterns, the way you weave your sophisticated palette and ideas together. I am putting your site on my blog so that others can learn about your beautiful work. Take a look at my site if you have time. I am working primarily in glass and mixed media at the moment and have dabbled in mosaic. You have obviously donemore than dabble! Very truly, Paula |

I have rushed out to buy another copy of your book to give to my niece as I know it will give her the lift she needs also to carry on her art.

Comments: Hi Laurie - I recently visited the Mosaic Institute in Oakland the day after your opening. I was blown away by your work - I have not been inspired like that in a very long time. Immediately bought your book and it has been my bible for the past week. Your work definitely is unique and makes such a statement. Your book is so well done. I have MANY mosaic books - it really is one of the best and unique (finally). Your links have been most helpful and I have been compulsively surfing many artists sights - including many rubber stamping sights - who knew?
Thanks for the inspiration. I am now ready to start working on some projects again.
Sincerely,
Stace Green

I am a meember of UniFem So California, a fundraising org for the development of women in Third World countries. We are putting on our 1st fundraiser----an Art-to-Wear sale and seeking a few more artists. Thus my need to reach the CV chair.

Teesha Moore suggested that I email you for some information. I will be in San Diego on December 9-11 with two friends. We are hoping to find (or create) a mini art class. I'm not sure where you are, but your ArtFest class description is exactly the kind of thing that we're looking for. Can you provide an art class in San Diego, or do you know someone who can? We're not particular about what we do -- we're looking for the Experience. Although, I must say your things are lovely!!!
Thanks,

Comments: Laurie,I returned home yesterday and the first thing I showed my husband, Michael, was the photo of the mirror you made in honor of your dad. This homage so impacted me. I am fortunate enough to still have both parents and have wondered how I will handle their loss when the time comes. Your work resonated with me and I think will be a venue for me to express so much of what I feel about and for them. They are both European (mom is Danish, dad is British) and not prone to emotion. When I attempt to tell them how much I appreciate what I've been given or express the degree of love I feel, it is often met with silence or a quick change of subject. I know, even now, that so much will remain unsaid. Now, with what you offered to your dad, I believe I will have a way in which to express all that I've been unable to say. *** I poured over your website - you are incredible, absolutely incredible. I want to go back and read your comments as the creator of each piece. Right now, I've got to get back to work on one of my doors. *** I enjoyed speaking with you yesterday at the "ArtUNraveled" - although I celebrate the creation of our family and the unique way in which it unfolded (I was Andrew's principal before I was his mom and the evolution of leaving my much love field to transition in to full time motherhood) - I am not usually as open about my son. I feel a deep desire to protect him (as he wasn't protected those first eight years) and am judicious about what I offer regarding him. You have an open and generous spirit. I rejoice in having that brief encounter and took so much away from it. I only wish I could have taken your workshop! My best to you. Safe journey as you return home. Comments: Laurie,
Listened to your radio spot and, while listening to your lilting voice, took the opportunity to renew my acquaintance with your website. Firstly, you outdid yourself - very articulate and obviously an "expert" in your subject, m'lady, as the interviewer mentions, you surely are the "Queen of Tiles"! Secondly, great kudos to Emile for setting up such a magical and color-rich site which really showpiece your amazing pieces very effectively. Lastly, thanks for the mention of CARE's work...having just returned from monitoring visit to the four worst affected countries the Asia region, I can confirm that CARE is indeed doing important work.

I bought some polymer clay and havent had much success cutting it nicely or rolling it out evenly. I am 18 months into pique assiette and found objects. Am very drawn to your icons. I would like to come close to making something that beautiful. It is a little late in my life to take time getting good, so I am trying as fast as I can. I think some of my works maybe pretty good, and I am going to try to get in a mosaic class and learn from an expert. Your art is exquisite, Tx, Fran |

I've not had much appreciation for mosaic work until I saw yours. The colours, the whimsy and the fresh approach have made me a fan.
By the way...how do you fasten the little wooden legs to your boxes? I've been trying to secure polymer clay legs to some metal tins and all I can say is that in my case glue is not the answer. |

Comments: Hello L.Mika:
Expressions Magazine did a wonderful job with your article. I sure hope the pictures did your art work justice. I am a Pyroscriber (Woodburner) from way back, and kept that as my Medium for many years until I used Acrylics & Watercolor to enhance some of the burnings. Some are just ment to be left alone.
I just love your bravery to mix so many different kinds of Mediums of art with jewlery. Have you ever done any clothing? To some how put your work even screened, on T-Shirts or the back of Jackets would look cool. I would by a one or two.
Well, have bent your ear enough. Just wanted to let you know that your work inspires me more creative with my own art.
Good Luck & Good day

Comments: During the latter part of the 20th century there seem to have been numerous attempts to pin down the quiddity of visual culture. It may prove that one defining project at the century's conclusion will be not the acceptance of mortality by a chastened art world, but a campaign to evolute the work of Laurie Mika as a meaningful vehicle for practitioners of both art and art criticism. The allurement and rectilinear composition of Laurie's work has been shaped by an engagement with popular expression and public space and I see no good reason why simply everyone should not possess an example.
